Christchurch is a scattered fen hamlet between Downham Market and Wisbech, where many of the old brick farmhouses and cottages have tall chimney stacks that have had little attention for a generation or more.
Properties here are typically 19th-century agricultural buildings — brick-built with clay pantile or plain tile roofs — sitting in flat, open countryside that gives wind very little resistance. Stacks on these buildings can be two metres or more above the ridge, which means the leverage on failing mortar joints is considerable. It's not unusual for us to find the top two or three courses have shifted noticeably out of plumb by the time we get on the scaffolding.
We rebuild stacks correctly: stripping back to stable brickwork, rebuilding in matching brick and mortar and re-bedding the pots and flaunching before we come down. Chimney rebuilds in rural Christchurch typically cost between £800 and £2,000 depending on stack height and extent of the damage. Call us for an accurate quote.
